marking note names
is there a way of marking note names? or do i need to manually add text?

Select the measures. Go to Properties. In the Note drop down, choose Head. Down at the bottom of that group, Show More. The first entry should be Notehead scheme. It will (probably) show Auto. Click on that drop down, and you will see all of the choices.

That's great, thanks. Can I select this as a default or for a selection of several notes? Or do I need to go through this procedure for every single note?

It is a per-staff setting IIRC
Or use the note names plugin
