quarter-note G9's (way up above 14th ledger line) begin popping up . sometime rapidly , sometimes slo .
So , press N , press 5 , and nothing else . I watch as MScore writes its own monotonous tune at the very high
pitch of G9 . It quits when I hit spacebar twice , or esc. (sometimes.)

Mac OS 10.7.5
MuseScore 2.3.2 ( version 3 not supported by my older excellent iMac)
It sounds like your G key is broke. The will be no more version 2 updates.
G key works fine . There is no such note as G9 on any keyboard-too high for dogs to hear.
Do you know of a way to reinstall version 2 ?
Try https://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings first, then https://musescore.org/en/handbook/install-macos
Do you have a midi device attached?
Definitely seems like something is sending random messages to MuseScore - perhaps a glitchy MIDI keyboard, perhaps a glitchy computer keyboard, perhaps a glitchy mouse/touchpad. In any case, it's almost certainly a hardware problem; installing a different version of MuseScore is unlikely to help.
