“Kirchenpausen” multimeasure rests

• Nov 14, 2018 - 01:05

how can I choose the look of my multimeasure rests? I’d like to have those conventional “Kirchenpausen” rests, but instead MuseScore displays an horizontal bar and I can’t find how to switch the look of the rest. I’d want it to look like this:

With some effort you can 'fake' your own Kirchenpausen using the Symbols Palette (shortcut is Z).
Enter 'time' in the search box for the numbers.
Enter 'rest' in the search box for the rests.
(The original whole measure rests are made invisible where necessary.)
Playback would not work. (Unless you create, then hide, genuine multimeasure rests)

Here's the MuseScore file: Kirchenpausen.mscz

Another way to do it is to set the Actual Duration of the measure to 4/4, 8/4, 12/4, 16/4 etc. which generates te correct rests for you. Add a number as text. Once your piece is stable (i.e. that segment isn't going to get edited again which might cause things to move around), use Inspector to adjust the Horizontal Offsets of the rests. This has the bonus of keeping the duration of the rests as intended.

To be honest, the duration of the rests wasn’t an issue, given that 1) I used an actual multi-measure rest with Jm6stringer’s workaround, and 2) I don’t listen to my score anyway.

However, your workaround gives the additional advantage of keeping also the font for the rest! Indeed, if my score is engraved with Emmentaler, the Bravura symbols kinda clash (as you can see with the semibreve rests in the exemple given).

Unfortunately, that problem remains unsolved regarding the number (which is displayed in Bravura font).
