"Cannot read file"

• Apr 3, 2018 - 22:49

I've never really encountered this before, but for some reason, my file is not able to be loaded and all I'm presented with is a message that says "Cannot read file." I was working on the tune yesterday and there was nothing really out of the ordinary. I'll attach the file here and see if it doesn't load for other people. Keep in mind that the score is really unpolished if you do happen to open it, haha.

Okay, so I was able to get the backup file, but it was a version from way back in December. The page says that it backs up the last saved version, and I know for a fact that I had a numerous amount of stable saves the day before it got corrupted. I made a ton of changes to the composition since December and I couldn't possibly remember all of them. Is there anything else I can do at this point? Is it possible to revert to an older version of the corrupted file? Also, what could I have possibly done to make it so corrupted?

The backup gets created when you first save a file after opening it. So, based on your description, it seems maybe you opened the file back in December, made some changes, saved - which triggered the backup - and then never closed the file again but instead have left it open for the past four months while making subsequent changes. If that's not the case - if you're sure you've closed and reopened the file since then when making changes - then the backup exists somewhere. Could well be in a different folder than you think. On Windows, could perhaps be in the "virtual store".

I did a system search, and nothing else showed up. It might be under a different file name though, so that might be why. Anyway, what happened was, I started it in December and then I saved and closed out of it. After that, I really didn't touch it for a while. All of a sudden, I felt that I should complete it or at least work on it some more, and so I opened it up recently during one session (the day before it got corrupted) and made a ton of changes to the composition. I made sure to save many times, but I can't remember how exactly I closed it. I either just closed it normally or I turned my laptop off. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not though. The only weird thing I remember adding was a bar of 16/8, which I was gonna replace later for something else that would make sense.
