'Docked' and 'floating' panels

• Oct 12, 2012 - 19:05

I am not sure if I'm missing something but I have 'undocked' a couple of control panels which by default are 'docked' (ie an integral part of the main GUI and haven't been able to put them back in the default, docked position. Even the "Reset to default" button in Preferences has no effect.

Can this be done?

I am also curious about the fact that some of these panels open in a set position whilst others are floating from the outset. Is there a reason for this? It would be nice if all of these panels could be either docked or floating and if docked, allowing the user to choose whether to dock left, right, top or bottom.

EDIT: I found double-clicking on the title bar docks the panel, if dockable. If this is documented I wasn't able to find it. I've not come across this method of (re-)docking a panel before.

It also seems that if you drag the undocked palette panel so that it is on top of (overlapping) the left margin of the MuseScore window (or partially off the left edge of the screen, if in full-screen mode) and then drop it, the palette will re-dock itself.

Also, if you drag and drop the palette panel on top of the right margin, it will dock on that side of the MuseScore window.

Thanks for the reply but it doesn't do that on Mac OS X 10.6.8. Whether in full screen mode or in a window (maximised or otherwise) dropping the palette off the left or right of the screen does not redock it. You can leave it with just one pixel showing and the rest off the screen if you select the very edge of the floating panel to move it. Only double-clicking the title bar of the panel re-docks it and then only in the default location.

I've just tried it on Windows (not my preferred machine) and see it does work there for panels (not just the palette) which are docked by default. It doesn't work with panels which are not docked by default.

It would be good if this could work on Mac as well and for other panels which you might want to dock. Personally I start up with the Play Panel open but it always ends up under the main window which defeats the point.
