8va line alignment, chord symbols alignment, chord symbol extending after final barline

in writing the attached fragment, I found three issues:

  1. The 8va line should, if I'm not mistaken, align with the accidental. I don't have Gould with me at the moment, but I'm fairly sure about it.
  2. It'd be great if the chord symbols in the second bar would be all aligned.
  3. The last chord symbol extends over the final barline.

I could easily fix no. 1 (line properties -> appearance -> offset -> -1) and no. 2 (style -> chord symbol -> maximum shift above -> 1.5 sp), but it would be nice if there was no need for manual intervention.
However, I couldn't find a solution for no. 3.

I'm using OS: macOS 13.3, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 4.0.2-230651546, revision: dbe7c6d.



FWIW, Gould lists either placement of the octave line as acceptable but recommends aligning with the accidental if space permits. A quick survey of the literature shows both in common use. Will be interesting to see what Simon says.

Regarding the chord symbols, MuseScore will align them if you set a value for max shift above in Format / Ctyle / Chord symbols (this is the max amount MuseScore will shift chord symbols when aligning). It defaults to 0 only for the sake of compatibility with older versions that didn't support this at all, but you can create your own template that sets it how you like. Note that the jazz templates do this automatically.

As for the overhang, you have your choice of how you'd to address that. The most obvious solution to me is make the measure wider with "}". Or both measures together if you'd like to preserve the relative spacing. But it's also common in contexts like these to shift the chord symbols left a bit. BTW, no need to use invisible time signatures for things like this; just alter the actual durations in measure properties.

Thanks for checking Gould. The examples I (quickly) checked seem to have the lines aligned with the accidental, or even slightly before the accidental (i.e. Harvey's Tombeau de Messiaen, but not always. I'd be quite interested in knowing what's the reason behind) but I don't have many references at hand at the moment.

About no. 3, I'd like to have an automatic solution, as I wouldn't like to manually many files. I can survive with it, I guess.

About the time signatures, I want this fragment to be without time signatures as it is an abstract example about intervals and chords. That said, making the first time signature invisible triggers what I think is a bug: the hidden time signature is automatically shifted to the right, resulting in too much space between the clef and the notes. In the second bar however the spacing is correct. Any idea about a workaround?

For #3, you could have your template use a wider spacing ratio, I guess, in Format / Style / Measure.

As I said, invisible time signature are not necessary - just set the actual duration of the measure in measure properties to whatever you otherwise would have used an invisible time signature for.
